New Skills Teaching Guidlines

Guidelines for Authorization to Teach Skills

Any scout who currently teaches a requirement as of 9/24 will be permitted to re-certify by 12/31 of this year. Anyone who does not complete that will have to be certified under the initial training standards; these standards will be used from 9/24 onward. I am not interested in telling people how to teach their skills, only in uniformity in certifying others.

Progress will be tracked by the scout instructor. It is recommended that they have a separate sheet of paper available for the adult instructor to sign to track their progress.

Re-cert

1.       3 scouts taught, tested, and passed.

a.       Pass Requirements by adult instructor standards.

b.      Adult observer should observe both teaching and testing on at least 1st attempt.

c.       Subsequent tests should be reviewed by adult instructors by asking trained scouts specific questions.

d.    If multiple requirements are covered under the skill, the adult instructor will determine which requirements should be demonstrated.

Initial Training

1.       1 observation by Scout Instructor of another scout or adult instructor. This is to give the scout a feel for teaching styles as well as a refresher in the material.

2.       1 Adult Instructor supervise teaching and testing

a.       This will remain independent of the next requirement.

3.       3 scouts taught, tested, and passed

a.       Pass Requirements by adult instructor standards

b.      Adult observer should observe testing on at least 1st attempt

c.       Subsequent tests should be reviewed by asking scouts specific questions

d.    If multiple requirements are covered under the skill, the adult instructor will determine which requirements should be demonstrated.

4.       Adult Instructor may require more if needed.  If uncertain, Adult instructors should err on the side of caution and delay the authorization to teach.

5.      During all phases, if the trained scout does not pass the requirement, the testing should be used as a teaching session and the scout instructor will test them at a later date.

Skills, other than those being re-certified, must be approved by the Scoutmaster or approved ASMs. Two skills must be authorized for consideration for the rank of Star. An additional skills is required for Life and one more is required for Eagle, yielding a total of four skills.  One Skill must be selected from each of the tiers outlined below:

I
flags
health
hiking
swimming
abuse

II
cooking
camping
firebuilding

III
woods tools
knots+lashing
lightweight stoves
map+compass

IV
